why this product

Made with heavy stainless steel, Stella stovetop espresso makers are nevertheless graceful appliances, producing a dense cup somewhere between a crema and a Turkish coffee. It’s a smooth ride that doesn't have the muddy watery-ness of a French press, the bitterness of a drip, the price tag of a full-on espresso machine, or the metallic aftertaste of its poor step-cousin, the lowly aluminum moka pot. The Stella Lucido comes in four sizes: 2-cup, 4-cup, 6-cup and 10-cup. Note that these are all measured in tiny espresso cups, much smaller than the standard 8-oz baking measure. A special reducer micro filter in the funnel can be flipped to make the coffee reservoir smaller, meaning if you have a 6-cup maker, with a small adjustment, you can make a 3-cup batch. Maintaining the right proportions of space, water and grounds avoids sacrificing the flavor of the coffee.   Made with highest quality 18/10 steel ("18/10" referring to the percentage of alloy to chromium), means the material is superbly stain- and corrosion-resistant — very important for acidic coffee — and makes the Stella Lucido easier to clean and keep looking showroom-new than aluminum. More importantly, using stainless steel means you don’t have to worry about growing concerns of aluminum on one's health. Stella Lucido has an ergonomic, brushed steel handle for safe handling.

use & care

Directions 1. Fill the bottom of the chamber with cool water just below the pressure relief valve (do not fill completely).  2. Pile the center chamber with finely ground coffee. Unlike an espresso machine, don't tamp down the coffee but instead gently spoon coffee until it's full or slightly heaping.  3. (Optional step) To use the reducer micro filter to make a half batch, pop out the filter using your finger tips or by inserting a slender object up the funnel and pushing the filter out. Flip the filter over so the four metal tabs are pointing downwards on the funnel. The reservoir for the coffee grounds will be reduced by half. Halve the amount of water accordingly. 4. Screw the two chambers tightly together, making sure the rubber ring isn't askew so the seal's nice and tight.  5. Keep stovetop (gas, electric, or glass-ceramic) at a low-to-medium heat.  6. When Stella begins to make a gurgling sound, remove from heat -- she'll finish brewing on her own, and don't worry about a little leftover water in the bottom chamber, this is normal.   7. Pour coffee from the top chamber and enjoy.     8. Do not unscrew the pieces without letting it cool, either over time, or by running a hot coffee maker under tap water for at least two minutes. Maintenance The Stella Lucido can be used on gas, electric or ceramic burners. If you have an induction burner, slip a diffusion plate under the espresso maker. Although the Stella Lucido is dishwasher safe, it's best to wash it by hand with a mild soap or detergent (although some claim no soap is best, arguing that soap deteriorates the coffee's natural oils, sacrificing flavor).  Avoid using steel wool and abrasive powders. All the pieces come apart so there are no sketchy nether regions your cleaning cloth can't get to. Store the coffee maker only when fully dry. Check the pressure relief valve every once in a while to make sure it's unclogged.

production & design

The Stella Lucidostainless steel stovetop espresso maker is crafted in Ferrara, Italy, a northern Italian city dating back to the middle ages. Known as a cultural center of art and music during the Renaissance, at the beginning of the 20th century, Ferrara became the cradle of an industrial renaissance, spawning  Stella Officine Metallurgica Lux. Founded by Gino Scarbi in 1924, it's still run by the third generation of the Scarbi family. All of this is to say that buying the Stella Lucido stainless steel espresso maker is a bit like being in the market for a set of wheels and ending up with a German-engineered luxury sedan.  Stella believes in practicality and function combined with elegance and luxury. The Lucido showcases Stella's classical design and high quality of material and craftsmanship, creating a stovetop espresso maker that will last generations.
