Made of Nigerian ox horn, this money clip is sturdy while retaining enough pliability to secure a few bills or a wad of cash. The naturally occurring swirling pattern and variations of black, cream and white shades means that each and every money clip is as unique as the person carrying it and the animal it came from. The horn for these money clips is sourced from free roaming Ankole cattle of Nigeria. These cows have plenty of space to roam, and so their horns tend be wide and robust. The horns used are a by-product of the Nigerian meat industry, and if not made into money clips, would have otherwise gone to waste.
Made of natural ox horn, the colors and pattern on each money clip will vary. Over time and with increased use, oils from hands and fingers will naturally darken the money clip to achieve a unique patina. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or extreme conditions to prevent cracking or yellowing. Clean the money clip with cool water and a mild soap, if desired. Rub gently with a soft cloth to dry. The money clip arrives with a tight fit (you can fit a few folded bills and a credit credit) but loosens over time and with use. You can also apply gentle heat from a hairdryer to warm up the horn and carefully open the clip to loosen. Too much force will cause it to snap.
The company that produced this money clip was established in 1749 as purveyors of horn goods, such as buttons and combs. Over the centuries, the company changed hands several times and was passed down to close associates, longtime employees and apprentices. To create the money clip, the horn is cut and made malleable through heating. While hot, the horn is bent to the desired shape. After molding, the money clip is polished to reveal the swirling and grain pattern innate within the horn. The specific horn used for this money clip is from Ankole cattle, native to Africa. Images of Ankole cows, with their distinctively long, expansive horns, have been found in ancient Egyptian cave paintings.
