why this product

The cultivator rips weeds and grass roots out of even the most stubborn of soil with its sharp, steel claw-like tines. Made by a five-generation family company in the Netherlands, the cultivator still has it’s antique tool good looks, but has been adapted and modernized over the years to local Dutch gardeners' concerns.  Most cultivators have almost pliable tines, which is back-breakingly frustrating when you’re on your knees ripping weeds out of the soil.  This cultivator has been made to last as many generations as the Dewit company itself. The boron steel roll-forged by Swedish hands is sent to the Dutch company’s family factory, where the tines are sharpened with trade secrets their blacksmiths have never shared. The boron steel tines are burnished with a black patina for a long life of ripping weeds out of the soil, and then attached to the handle made of ash wood harvested from Slovakian tree stands approved by the Forest Stewardship Council. Ash wood is strong yet elastic, making the tool easy to handle (and it isn’t made of any rare, protected trees to boot).

use & care

Despite the black patina slicked onto the tines to give them a long life, oil your cultivator and keep it nice and clean to keep it from rusting. Remember to bring in your tools in case it rains. It's sharp -- be careful to not hurt yourself or others. All Dewit tools, including the cultivator, come with a lifetime warranty. If anything should happen to one of your tools, send a photo of the damaged tool to Kaufmann Mercantile and we'll send you a replacement.

production & design

With tines made with the chemical compound boron, the cultivator is known for its strength and durability. The steel is roll-forged with a heavy bar, welding it into its claw-like shape. The strong yet elastic handle is made of ash wood from Slovakia. The tines are sharpened by the Dewit family blacksmiths where gas still powers the facilities, just as it has been for over a century. The company's factory is in Kornhorn, a small village near the city of Groningen in the north of Holland. They have been in the picturesque Dutch village since its beginning on April 1st 1898 when Willem de Wit started his blacksmith company. The original antique tools are still the basis for their current designs. They've been updated ever so slightly based on the needs and wants of the gardeners that thrive around the small village.
