The pocket square. Once used to shield the noses of the upper class from the daily odors of a less than civilized world, this modest swatch of fabric has taken on a more sartorial function in recent decades. Allowing the wearer to express their individual flare without having to invest in a whole wardrobe full of different suits, pocket squares are a far less expensive and easily interchangeable way to immediately elevate your style. Ideally, the pattern or color of the square should compliment one's tie, though traditionally speaking, it should never be a direct duplicate. Whether you choose to follow convention, or throw caution to the wind and match what’s in your pocket to what’s around your neck, donning a pocket square is a sure sign of a confident and knowledgeable dresser.
These classic, colorful pocket squares with just a hint of summery linen texture are an ideal medium weight that's also appropriate for year-round wear. To achieve the simple straight fold, lay the pocket square flat and straight in front of you. Fold it in half from left to right. Bring the bottom up and fold it up two-thirds of the way. Fold the fabric in thirds from left to right. Place the folded pocket square in your pocket with the flush side facing outward. For a step-by step video instruction of this and other popular folds, see our Further Reading section below. To care for your tie should it become soiled, spot clean by hand and hang to dry. Alternatively, you may choose to have it dry-cleaned.
These pocket squares are designed by Apolis, a California-based company focused on socially responsible fabric sourcing and manufacturing. Made from cotton and linen blend fabric milled and woven in India, the colors of these ties are created by natural dyes derived from madder, Osage-orange, and indigo pigments. Each square is individually handcrafted in Los Angeles at a 2,500 square foot studio space. Empowering small manufacturers and responsibly sourcing their fabrics—it's this kind of socially-conscious production process that Apolis ("global citizen"? in Greek) stands for, and why we love what they do.
