About Makwa Studio

HANDMADE HERITAGE   Makwa Studio was started by Maggie Thompson in Minneapolis, 2014. Makwa means bear in the Ojibwe language. Maggie Thompson is a textile artist and designer, with a focus on knitwear and weaving. She was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN and is a member of the Fond Du Lac Band of Ojibwe. In 2013, she received her Bachelor of Fine Art in Textiles at the Rhode Island School of Design. She creates timeless, cozy wearable art for her business Makwa Studio, where she brings subtle cultural and design references into her work. Her items are all hand loomed on a knitting machine and her materials are all U.S. sourced.
