About Ikou Tschuss

In our tireless quest to assemble the perfect beach kit, we’ve tracked down the ultimate beach blanket/sarong/wrap. Designed by Guya Marini and Carmen D’Apollonio of Ikou Tschüss, they’re made of Italian linen trimmed with recycled twine and are hand stitched and crocheted by grannies in Switzerland.

In either the pale blue or brown and blue striped version, these blankets are striking accessories for the beach, pool or home. They’re also incredibly versatile—you can wear one as a sarong, use it to cover your deck chair, and then take it home and enjoy it as a throw or bedspread.

But what do grannies in Switzerland have to do with seaside accessories? Marini and D’Apollonio are both natives of Zürich and collaboration is central to their design process. Because each piece is made entirely by hand and incorporates recycled materials, the artisan who creates it has a real say in its appearance. By having grandmothers involved in the process, the designers say, they’re able to retain an old-world style of the ‘craftswomanship’ they feel is disappearing.

By keeping their production local and intimate, Ikou Tschüss—the name incorporates the Japanese word for “let’s go” and the German word for “goodbye”—are able to create products with timeless value and appeal. You may get one of these blankets for the summer, but you’ll treasure it for years to come.
