About Bamboocycles

This is the bike that might just motivate us to give up our cab habit: Made of bamboo, it’s astonishingly light, environmentally friendly and—so often a deal breaker with us and bicycles—ultra stylish. The one-speed free wheel Bamboocycle UH-02 C+ is the brainchild of Diego Cárdenas, a Mexico City-based designer and cycling enthusiast who regards bamboo as the material of the future. It’s easy to see why: Known as “steel grass,” it’s not only light—the Bamboocycle is about a third of the weight of a traditional bike—but requires very little energy to harvest.

Bamboo generates 30 percent more oxygen than trees, can regenerate without replanting, has a root structure that prevents soil erosion, requires no pesticides and grows so easily that even drought and floods don’t slow it down. But the Bamboocycle, which we’re offering in either matte black or glossy white (along with a host of customization options for the bars, fork, rims, pedals, and crank [See Product Details below], optional front brake. is no tree-hugger gimmick. This bike has been designed to perform well on some of the most demanding terrain on earth: crowded city streets. The wheelbase distance has been reduced to allow for tight maneuvering in small spaces, the steering system lets you change direction quickly and accurately and the riding position was designed for fast handling.

“Bamboo was used for both aesthetic and functional reasons,” says Cárdenas. “It’s beautiful: the proportions, the colors and just how it works. And its mechanical characteristics are ideal for a product like this—it’s lightweight, strong and flexible.” Whether you use it to get to work or just cruise around on the weekend, the Bamboocycle will get you there in sustainable style.
