The first time you hold an infant is a never-to-be-forgotten experience. From the intoxicating new baby smell to way they bat their little arms around, they hook you like a drug. You want to protect them from everything , both small (loud noises, cold drafts) and large (second-hand smoke, lead paint). Our particular peeve when it comes to babies and their wellbeing is scratchy clothing—if it annoys us, just imagine how much it irritates someone who can’t even tell you that the sweater you just put on them is driving them crazy? With this in mind, our new policy on baby presents is to go straight to TANE Organics, a line of 100 percent organic, softer than soft clothing and accessories for the toddler-and-under set.
Designed by fashion industry veteran Sheree Lee, TANE (the name means “seed” in Japanese) puts babies’ comfort front and center. The clothing—like the adorable pointelle onesie we’re offering—is based on the kimono, so nothing binds or pulls, no matter how active your little darling is. The hat and sock-style booties are hand knit of the purest, most luxurious cotton available and are designed to pull on easily, which is exactly what every parent needs when they’re trying to get out the door. The hats were inpired by the traditional shape of a Peruvian children’s hat that’s worn during festivals, and the booties are lined in cozy alpaca fleece and finished with a soft alpaca sole. And that ecru color is not only gorgeous (and suitable for either boys or girls), but it means that the fabric is not dyed or bleached. No pesticides, no chemicals, no harm done to either baby or the environment. If only shopping for adults was this easy.
