The Plumen 001 is named for a plume—a bird’s show feather used to attract attention—and it does just that. Though it works like other fluorescent bulbs, using 80 percent less power than conventional bulbs and lasting eight times as long, it is made of two graceful curves of glass that are compelling from every angle. The designers also integrated a few technical adjustments to improve the quality of light—which is warm, and closely mimics incandescents—and the ignition time. The Plumen was developed in London and won the 2011 Brit Insurance Design of the Year Award.
