Reindeer skin is uniquely strong, lightweight and incredibly durable. At Böle—where the leather tanners all wear this traditional type of protection for their clothing—some reindeer aprons have been in service since the 1950s. Reindeer leather offers better protection from heat and is less likely to catch fire than cloth. And over time, the skins take on a beautiful patina. ?? Böle prepares its leather using an ancient bark tanning technique, in which leather is cured in vats filled with spruce bark for nearly a year, lending a nice natural color. Though this is the oldest known form of tanning, very few tanneries still use it. ? ? Böle is a fourth generation tannery and saddle maker in the far north of Sweden, and their clients include the Swedish Royal Family.
